In today’s society, many people can’t live without their
smartphone. When the battery dies, or is about to die, it is tragic. In my
favorite superbowl commercial this year, Mophie captures the feeling of your
phone dying extremely well.
In the commercial, we see the Earth going into chaos. It
rains fish, a tree spontaneously bursts into flames, there are natural
disasters all over the world, gravity stops working. Then it cuts to a battery
icon that is in the red, almost dead. We then see a man dressed in all white in
a room that is all white, it clearly represents God. The commercial implies
that God controls the Earth on his phone, and it is in chaos because his phone
is dead. The tagline is the commercial is, “When your phone dies, God knows
what can happen.” The commercial then cuts a product shot and tells you what
the product is: a phone case that charges your phone so you will never run out
of battery.
This commercial is extremely effective at targeting the
younger generation in this commercial. In the beginning you aren’t sure what
the seemingly serious commercial is about, and then later we find humor in the
thought that God controls the Earth on his phone. At the same time, we can
relate to “God” because we often feel similar when our phone or other
electronics die. This makes us want to buy the charger-case.
Even though I find this commercial funny, some could find it
offensive. Because it shows God in a humorous situation like this, people could
be offended by that and the thought that God controls people on his phone.
Whether you find it offensive or not, it most likely
captured your attention and taught you about Mophie, a company you probably
didn’t know about before this.
